Traffic Signal and Lighting Design

Columbia Engineering’s traffic engineers have years of experience designing and implementing traffic signal controlled intersections, including studies establishing signal warrants, analysis of traffic to determine design parameters, design of the signal components (including mast arm and span wire supports), and operation of the signals through phasing and timing plans. This includes all signalized intersections from isolated intersections, to urban signal systems operated through Traffic Management Centers. Our staff has been involved with all detection systems, and traffic monitoring, including traditional inductive loops, video detection, and microwave radar detection. We are experienced in interconnected signals using fiber optics, traditional twisted pair cable, and wireless systems to provide effective signal coordination.

Columbia is also experienced in providing Highway Lighting Analysis and Design for ADA compliant pedestrian features at signalized intersections and mid-block crossings, as well as roadway corridor and interchange high mast lighting.

We are currently Traffic Operations Design prequalified with DOTs in Georgia and Florida, and are working to achieve prequalification in other southeastern states. Our Signal and Lighting Design client list includes state and local governments in Florida and Georgia as well as private-sector clients. Columbia staff has done work in states from Florida to New York to Tennessee.
