Columbia was selected by the Gwinnett County Dept. of Transportation to provide engineering services for the 1.2 mile transportation improvements of South Old Peachtree (SOP) Road at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard (PIB), turn land at Lou Ivy Road, and multi-use path from Medlock Bridge Road to Pickneyville Park. The scope comprised of the design of the addition of right turn lanes on 5-lane divided PIB, dual left and single right turn lanes on SOP, a vertical curve correction along SOP, signal design at the intersection of SOP and PIB, and improvement of approximately of SOP from a 2- lane rural roadway section to 2- and 3-lane roadway with multi-use path and sidewalks. Cost savings were realized for this project with avoidance of a utility conflict. A potential conflict that could have impacted costs occurred when a reuse water line was being constructed through project limits that would have been in conflict with the proposed construction plans. Columbia worked closely with GCDOT personnel and the reuse line contractor to facilitate a solution for the contractor adjust the alignment for the reuse line to eliminate any conflicts when this project was constructed.
